No water sports or open water swimming at Antrim Loughshore as investigation continues

Antrim and Newtownabbey Borough Council has urged the community not to partake in water sport activities, including open water swimming in the area of Antrim Loughshore, after two dogs died after paddling in the water.

Investigations are ongoing by both council officers and DAERA officials following the heartbreaking deaths of the family pets. Council also ‘strongly’ advised dog owners ‘to exercise caution and keep their dogs on a lead at all times’.

At the beginning of this week (Monday 9 May) a spokesperson for DAERA told Love Ballymena:

On Thursday 5 May, the NIEA received reports that a dog, alleged to have been in contact with the water in Lough Neagh, near Rea’s Wood, Antrim, had died.

“Further reports were received that a second dog had died in similar circumstances.

“The NIEA began an investigation on Thursday to determine if any water quality or water pollution issues can be identified.

“The investigation remains ongoing at this time.”
