Robin Swann MP at Antrim Train Station
Over 1,200 residents and supporters have backed an open letter from Robin Swann MP urging Infrastructure Minister Liz Kimmins MLA to set out a clear, definitive timeline for reopening the Knockmore Railway Line between Lisburn and Antrim.
The South Antrim MP has formally written to the Minister to present the letter, which calls for transparency, certainty and a firm commitment to move the long-awaited rail project forward.
Mr Swann said the response from the public had been “exceptional,” with signatures pouring in during the week the open letter was available.
“Exceptional” level of public support
Speaking after submitting the letter, Mr Swann said:
“I want to express my thanks to everyone who took the time to sign. The number of signatures gathered in such a short period shows just how strongly people across South Antrim and beyond feel about the Knockmore Line. It is an issue with very broad support from every community.
“This level of public engagement underlines the importance of the project, which would reconnect Lisburn and Antrim via Glenavy and Crumlin and finally deliver rail access to Belfast International Airport.
“Our local towns and villages have been clear about the economic, social and connectivity benefits this line would bring. Local residents want to see progress, and they want clarity about when it’s going to happen. The support shown through this letter reinforces that message.”
Calls for clear timelines amid repeated delays
In his correspondence, Mr Swann notes that the Department for Infrastructure had previously indicated the feasibility study would be completed over the summer, followed by a ministerial response in the autumn. More recent updates have referred only to progress “in the coming months.”
He believes the shifting timelines have deepened frustration among residents.
Mr Swann added:
“It is important that a definite timeline is set out. People deserve to know when the feasibility study will be published, when a decision will be made and what the next steps will be.”
The letter further urges the Minister to commit fully to the project, emphasising its long-term value for Glenavy, Crumlin, Aldergrove, Antrim and surrounding areas.
Residents urged to continue adding their names
Initial expectations had placed the feasibility study’s completion in the summer, but repeated delays have left many residents feeling increasingly uncertain about the future of the Knockmore Line.
Reiterating his call for clarity, Mr Swann previously stated at the launch of his campaign:
“People across South Antrim deserve clarity.
“Reopening the Knockmore Line would be a game-changer for transport, connectivity and economic development across this constituency, and residents have made their support for it abundantly clear.”
Although the letter has now been formally presented, Mr Swann is continuing to invite residents to add their names before the final submission early in December.
“This is an opportunity for the people of South Antrim to speak with one voice.
“The more signatures we gather, the stronger our message will be - that this project must be prioritised.”
Residents can read and sign the letter via Mr Swann’s constituency office or through his online channels. Anyone seeking further information is encouraged to contact his office directly.
