Mid & East Antrim set to fly the flag again for Emergency Services Day and Merchant Navy Day

Mid and East Antrim Borough Council is set to mark this year’s Emergency Services Day on 9 September by flying the flag from civic buildings and hosting a ceremony with invited members of the emergency services.

Emergency Services Day (also known as 999 Day) is a national day across the UK, supported by HM The Queen, the Prime Minister and First Ministers of Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales.

The day is an opportunity to both support and recognise the efforts and dedication of the heroic men and women who serve their communities in every corner of the United Kingdom.

The day also recognises the volunteers who are an essential part of the emergency services family and play a core part in keeping us all safe. These include Search & Rescue, Retained Firefighters, NHS Community Responders, St John Ambulance, RNLI, and Coastguard volunteers.

At a meeting of Council on Monday evening (2 August) Mayor Cllr William McCaughey said:

“Emergency Services Day gives us an opportunity to show support for the selfless men and women of the emergency services.”

Council will also mark Merchant Navy Day on 3 September this year by flying the Red Ensign Flag on civic buildings across Mid and East Antrim, and will also feature a flag hoisting ceremony at LarneHarbour.

“This annual event provides us as a borough with an opportunity to honour and reflect on our rich maritime history and the significance of Larne port on our economy.”
