With the wearing of face coverings in shops and other enclosed public spaces becoming compulsory from today in Northern Ireland, the need for inexpensive and eco-friendly face coverings is bigger than ever – and we can help our residents to meet the demand.
Cloth face coverings are better for our environment. They can be washed frequently and re-used, thereby keeping the costs down for individuals and reducing waste to landfill.
In June, Council's Health and Wellbeing Department publicised their ‘Mask Makers’ initiative, which was aimed at individuals and community groups to help meet the demand for face coverings, masks and scrubs.
Since then, the Community Health and Wellbeing Team has supplied sewing machines and materials to several people in the area.
Whilst shielding, Amy Holmes from Broughshane, decided to put her time to good use and learn a new skill. Council supplied her with equipment and materials and Amy is now an accomplished ‘Mask Maker’.

Council still have a small number of sewing machines available for loan to residents.
The machines come with a supply of needles, pins and scissors to help with your sewing, and will include a pattern for making face coverings.
There is also a small supply of fabric for those that need some to get them started.
The machines will be cleaned and can be delivered to you if needed (social distancing measures will apply)
If you think you could help your family, carers or community by using your skills, or learn a new skill like Amy, and would like to borrow a machine, please contact us ‘sew’ we can help you to help others.
