Mayor ‘honoured’ to support two local charities during his Term of Office

The Mayor of Mid and East Antrim Borough, Cllr Peter Johnston, has chosen to support two charities his Mayoral Term. Christians Against Poverty and the Royal Irish Regiment Benevolent Fund provide much needed help and services that have benefitted people within Mid and East Antrim.

Christians Against Poverty work across the borough to help people in debt or financial difficulty by providing a debt counselling service and a range of community support.

A spokesperson for Christians Against Poverty (CAP) said:

“We are delighted and grateful for the recognition of the Mayor in choosing CAP as one of his charities for the year. We take this opportunity to say ‘Thank you’, not just on behalf of CAP UK and each of these local CAP Debt Centres, but the many clients from this area who will access our services and experience a positive impact in their ability to deal with their debt, a positive impact on their mental health, relationships and confidence.”

The Royal Irish Regiment Benevolent Fund, meanwhile, provides support to the entire Regimental family including Veterans from antecedent Regiments.

The Benevolent Fund provides support by helping veterans to improve their chances of success in civilian employment and provides opportunities to keep in touch through organised activities.

The Royal Irish Regiment Benevolent Fund said the support from the Mayor during his term of office will be invaluable to the local community.

“We provide funds to improve the quality of life for the Serving Soldiers and their families such as Sports Areas, Family trips, Dependents Clubs, and the upkeep of Welfare Minibuses”, a spokesperson for the charity said.

“Funded through voluntary donations, investment dividends and fund raising, in recent years we have been able to assist everyone who approached the fund with a genuine need.”

Mayor Johnston added: “As a family man with two young children, I recognise the difficulties that many households will face as we recover from the Covid-19 pandemic. I will ensure that my tenure as Mayor will be utilised to help and support those who need it most at this time.

“CAP have been involved with supporting the community during the COVID-19 crisis and will be essential for the community as we recover. The Royal Irish Regiment have strong connections with the borough and provide valuable support to those who are vulnerable. It is an honour to be able to support both these organisations.”
