A man in his 40s was stabbed several times with a pair of scissors after opening the door of his Ballymena flat to two intruders in what police are treating as an aggravated burglary.
Detectives have launched an appeal for information following the violent incident at a property in Andena Grange on Saturday evening, 11 April, during which the victim was also robbed of personal belongings.
The attack was reported to have taken place sometime between 8.30pm and 10pm when two males called to the door of the flat. When the occupant answered, he was allegedly set upon and stabbed several times.
Despite the violent nature of the assault, the man managed to fight the attackers off.
During the struggle, the intruders stole his mobile phone, wallet and watch before fleeing the scene.
Police said the victim’s injuries were relatively minor and, thankfully, did not require hospital treatment.
Police appeal for witnesses and footage
Detectives in Ballymena are now appealing for anyone who may have seen suspicious activity in the area on Saturday night to come forward.
The two suspects have been described as men in their 20s wearing baseball caps.
Investigators are particularly keen to hear from motorists or residents who may have dash-cam or CCTV footage from the Andena Grange area during the relevant timeframe.
In an appeal issued on Monday, detectives said any footage or information could prove vital in helping identify those responsible.
Anyone with information is asked to contact police in Ballymena on 101, quoting reference number 592 13/04/26.
Reports can also be made online through the PSNI non-emergency reporting form, while information can be passed anonymously to Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
Serious incident in residential area
The aggravated burglary will raise concern among residents in the local area given the level of violence involved in what appears to have been a targeted doorstep attack.
Police enquiries are ongoing as detectives work to establish the circumstances surrounding the incident, including whether the victim was specifically targeted and whether the suspects were known to him.
Officers have not released any further details at this stage.
