Man released on bail after GBH arrest over critically injured man found in Ballymena

A 39-year-old man arrested on suspicion of grievous bodily harm after another man was found unconscious in Ballymena has been released on bail as police continue their enquiries.

The injured man, aged in his forties, remains in hospital in a critical condition following the incident in the town centre during the early hours of Saturday morning, 19 September.

Man found unconscious in town centre

Police were initially alerted at around 5.05am on Saturday after receiving a report of an unconscious man at the junction of Alexander Street and Broughshane Street.

Officers attended the scene, where Northern Ireland Ambulance Service personnel were already providing treatment to the man, who had sustained a head injury. He was subsequently taken to hospital.

Police have now confirmed that the injured man is aged in his forties and remains critically ill in hospital.

GBH arrest and bail

As part of the investigation, a 39-year-old man was arrested on Saturday on suspicion of grievous bodily harm.

Police confirmed on Sunday that the man has since been released on bail to allow for further police enquiries.

No charge has been brought and police have not provided further details about the circumstances surrounding the injured man’s head injury.

Officers are continuing to appeal for information as they investigate what happened in the Alexander Street and Broughshane Street area.
