Man Charged with Murder of Chloe Mitchell

Brandon Rainey.

A 26-year-old man has appeared in court charged with the murder of 21-year-old Chloe Mitchell in Ballymena.

Brandon John Rainey of James Street area of the town, was charged with murdering Chloe Mitchell between 2 and 5 June this year. He appeared before Ballymena Magistrates' Court on Monday morning, 12 June.

The other accused is Ryan Johnston Gordon, a care assistant from Nursery Close, Ballymena. He is charged that on the same dates he assisted an offender, namely Brandon Rainey.

Both men appeared via videolink to Ballymena Courthouse.

At this morning's hearing a solicitor stated that Rainey had "significant mental health difficulties and was a paranoid schizophrenic."

The same also asked that his client be remanded to a secure mental health unit for medical assessment.

Responding to the request a PSNI detective inspector stated that the accused had escaped from the facility on three previous occasions and objected to the request.

The judge accepted the officer's request and remanded Rainey to prison with the assessment to be carried out in custody.

He was remanded in custody until 6 July.

Representing Ryan Gordon, a solicitor said his client also had "mental health difficulties".

He said there had been no application for bail today.

His client was remanded into custody with a bail application set for for 20 June.
