A man has been arrested following a serious assault on a teenage boy in Ahoghill, which left the victim requiring hospital treatment and deeply shaken.

Police said the incident occurred at around 8.50pm on Saturday, 31 January, in a car park in The Diamond area of the village.

According to police, the teenager was attacked by a masked man wielding a blunt object, believed to be a crowbar, during what is being treated as a violent and unprovoked assault.

Sergeant Edens said:

“We received a report at approximately 8.50pm on Saturday, 31st January that a teenage boy had been assaulted in a carpark within The Diamond area.

“It’s understood the suspect, an unknown man who was wearing a mask, assaulted the teenager with a blunt object, believed at this time to be a crowbar across his face.

“He sustained facial injuries as a result of the attack – and required hospital treatment. He was also left shocked and terrified by what happened.”

The attack has caused concern within the local community, particularly given the age of the victim and the apparent use of a weapon in a public area.

Police confirmed that a suspect has since been detained.

“A man aged in his 40s has been arrested in connection with the report this afternoon, Sunday 1st February, and remains in police custody at this time as enquiries continue into the circumstances of what happened,” Sergeant Edens added.

Investigations are ongoing, and police are continuing to appeal for information from the public.

“Anyone who witnessed the assault or has information that could help, is asked to call police on 101, quoting reference number 1397 31/01/26.”
