More than 1,300 Lidl Northern Ireland employees will see their pay increase from next month, as the retailer announces a £2.3 million investment in wages across the region.

From 1 March, Lidl Northern Ireland store and warehouse employees will see their hourly rate rise from £12.40 to £12.80. The increase forms part of a wider commitment that has seen the retailer invest more than £10.8 million in pay rises locally since 2022.

Over that period, employees have benefitted from an approximate 27.5% cumulative pay increase — equating to an average £6,500 in additional take-home pay during the height of the cost-of-living crisis.

What the latest increase means

The latest £2.3 million investment will deliver an average 4% uplift to employees’ overall ‘Total Rewards’ package. This includes a 3% increase to salaries — equal to, on average, £930 per employee per annum — with the remaining investment directed towards benefits such as pension contributions, private healthcare and personal insurance.

All Lidl Northern Ireland employees will benefit from the changes.

The announcement comes as Lidl continues to expand its footprint across the region, opening new stores and creating jobs. In 2024, the retailer unveiled a £150 million expansion investment over three years, with workforce reward described as central to sustaining that growth.

“Supporting our colleagues is the foundation of our success”

Commenting on the announcement, Maeve McCleane, Chief People Officer at Lidl Ireland & Northern Ireland, said:

“At Lidl, we believe that supporting our colleagues is the foundation of our success. Today, we are delighted to announce a £2.3 million commitment to enhancing salaries, hourly paid and total reward packages for our entire workforce throughout Northern Ireland.

“While the economic climate remains a challenge, our focus is on a holistic approach to employee compensation, balancing immediate salary growth with long-term lifestyle benefits providing more than just competitive pay; we are building a comprehensive support system that benefits every single individual.

“This is our way of saying a sincere thank you for our colleague’s central role in driving Lidl’s success.”

Recognition as a leading employer

The retailer was recently named Employer of the Year at the Business Eye Awards 2025 and has been certified as a Top Employer for 2026 by the Top Employers Institute for the sixth consecutive year.

The Top Employer accreditation is a globally recognised certification highlighting organisations that demonstrate excellence in HR policies and people practices.

Lidl Northern Ireland has introduced a range of benefits in recent years, including paid maternity, paternity, fertility and carers leave. The company has also removed the mandatory retirement age and introduced dedicated supports for miscarriage, domestic abuse and family carers.

In addition, Lidl became the first company on the island of Ireland to achieve Gold Level Menopause Workplace Excellence Accreditation from The Menopause Hub Academy.
