Larne RNLI were requested to launch yesterday evening (Sunday 7 August) to reports of a 22 foot fishing boat that had broken down close to Muck Island, near Islandmagee, County Antrim.

Initially launching the all-weather lifeboat, Dr John McSparran, the volunteer crew made their way to the casualties reported location. Upon finding the casualty, it was established that the two people on board were safe and well and it was decided to establish a tow line and bring the boat back to its moorings in Larne Lough.

The smaller in-shore lifeboat, Terry, was requested to launch to take up the tow as the casualty boat as it approached the mooring, as the smaller boat offered more manoeuvrability.

Larne RNLI’s coxswain, Barry Kirkpatrick, said:

“The casualties did the right thing by asking for help. We will always assist anyone who asks.

“Please ensure that you have a way of contacting the shore if you are going on the water. With the summer here and more people visiting the coast and going into the water, it’s important to remember that if you see anyone in difficulty or needing help at sea to call 999 or 112 and ask for the coastguard.”
