Gun report sparks armed police response in Toomebridge

A routine patrol in Toomebridge turned into a major police response on Sunday evening after officers were alerted to reports of a man carrying a gun in a residential area.
Two men were arrested following the incident in the Red Row area at around 7pm on Sunday, 22nd February. Armed officers attended the scene and suspected Class A drugs were also seized during follow-up searches.
Inspector McCallion outlined how events unfolded.
“Officers were on mobile patrol in the Red Row area at around 7pm on Sunday, 22nd February when they were alerted by two members of the public that a male in the vicinity had a gun.
“The officers subsequently stopped to speak with a group which had gathered outside one of the properties.
“Additional officers, including those from the Armed Response Unit (ARU), also attended the scene and, following enquiries, a 28-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of possession of a firearm/imitation firearm with intent to cause fear of violence. He was also later arrested on suspicion of making threats to kill and remains in police custody at this time.
“A search was also conducted at the property, with a quantity of suspected Class A drugs seized. A second, 37-year-old man, was then arrested on suspicion of possession of a Class A controlled drug. He has since been released on bail to allow for further police enquiries.
“Our enquiries are ongoing and we would appeal to anyone with information which might assist us to contact police on 101, quoting reference number 1263 of 22/02/26.

Police have confirmed investigations are continuing and are urging anyone who may have witnessed activity in the Red Row area around the time of the incident to come forward.
