Retailers whose combined service spans more than three centuries have been recognised at a special mayoral reception celebrating Ballymena’s rich trading history.

Honouring decades of local service

The event, held at The Braid, brought together some of the town’s longest-serving business figures as part of Ballymena’s 400th anniversary year, highlighting the enduring role of independent retail in the local community.

Mayor of Mid and East Antrim, Councillor Jackson Minford, paid tribute to the dedication, resilience and longevity of those in attendance, describing the occasion as a fitting moment to reflect on the town’s commercial heritage.

Mayor reflects on changing retail landscape

“With Ballymena celebrating its 400th anniversary this year, it was an honour to hear some of its longest-serving retailers share memories with each other,” he said.

“Whether a shopper was looking for footwear, household or DIY products, or perhaps a paper to read, these gentlemen were always there to serve.

“They spoke of how their businesses have adapted over time while maintaining the traditions of their trade. I wish them every success in their continued service to local shoppers and in their respective retirements.”

Businesses that shaped generations of shoppers

Those attending the reception represented a wide cross-section of Ballymena’s retail sector, each with decades of experience serving local customers and adapting to changing consumer habits.

Among those recognised were Thomas McKillen of McKillens; Eugene Diamond of Diamonds Newsagents; James McNeill of James McNeill Hardware, Broughshane; Richard McLaughlin of Wyse Byse; and William Calderwood of Arbuckle and Calderwood.

A milestone moment for Ballymena’s 400th year

The reception formed part of wider celebrations marking Ballymena’s 400-year milestone, offering a moment not only to look back on the town’s history but also to recognise those who have played a direct role in shaping its day-to-day life for generations.

For many local residents, these businesses have been more than shops — they have been familiar fixtures woven into the fabric of the community, serving families across decades of change while continuing to evolve with the times.

As Ballymena reflects on four centuries of growth and transformation, the stories shared at The Braid serve as a reminder that its strength has long been built on the people behind its shop counters as much as the streets they trade on.
