The Filipino community in Ballymena has issued a public statement today, Friday 27 June, strongly condemning a recent alleged sexual assault involving two of Filipino nationals, who have been charged with serious offences, including the reported sexual assault and rape of a 13-year-old girl.

A third individual has been released on bail.

In response to the charges, community leaders expressed their unequivocal support for the victim and emphasised their shared values of respect, integrity, and justice.

“As a community, we stand in solidarity with everyone to end all forms of violence against women and girls. We unequivocally condemn such reprehensible conduct and affirm our full support to the victim of the sexual assault.”

The statement acknowledges the distress caused by the incident but stresses that it is an isolated case which does not represent the broader Filipino population in the area.

“For many years, the Filipino community in Ballymena has been known for upholding a reputation of integrity, hard work, and respect. We are appalled by this isolated incident and it does not reflect the values we stand for and have consistently demonstrated.”

The community, which forms a valued part of the social and economic fabric of Ballymena, reiterated its commitment to the safety and welfare of all residents.

“We remain committed to maintaining the positive image our community has built and will continue to support and maintain efforts that promote the welfare and safety of all women, children and the whole community.”

The group also expressed confidence in the UK legal system, stating:

“We firmly believe in the justice system of this country and that all individuals involved will be held accountable and subject to the penalties prescribed by the UK law.”

In concluding, the community appealed for understanding and asked that the wider Filipino community not be judged based on the actions of a few.

“We, sincerely hope that this incident will not lead to judgement on the rest of us and that we will continue to be treated with courtesy and respect.”

Context and ongoing proceedings

The Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI) has charged two individuals in connection with the alleged assault, while a third has been released on bail pending further investigations. Legal proceedings are ongoing.

The case has prompted widespread public attention, and local organisations, including advocacy groups, have called for continued efforts to protect vulnerable individuals and support survivors of abuse.
