Jon Burrows selected as new North Antrim MLA

The Ulster Unionist Party (UUP) has confirmed that Jon Burrows has been appointed as the new Member of the Legislative Assembly (MLA) for North Antrim, following the recent resignation of Colin Crawford.

Mr Burrows is a former senior police officer in the Police Service of Northern Ireland.

The announcement came after what the party described as a “rigorous internal selection process with independent oversight.”

In a statement, a UUP spokesperson said:

“After a rigorous internal selection process with independent oversight, we can now confirm that Jon Burrows has been selected to fill the vacancy of North Antrim MLA.

“We would like to thank Colin Crawford for his dedicated service to the Assembly over the last year and wish him well with future endeavours.”

Colin Crawford, who stepped down citing personal reasons, served as MLA for just over a year. His decision to resign was made public in June, marking what he described as the “right one for myself and my family”.

Praise for new MLA

The appointment of Jon Burrows has been warmly welcomed by local party officials, with Cllr Brian Thompson, Chair of the North Antrim Association, praising both the outgoing and incoming representatives.

“I want to start by thanking Colin for all of his efforts over the last year and wish him well.

“We also want to thank all those who put their name forward and took part in the selection process.

We are delighted to have Jon on board.

“Jon is an exceptional individual who has been appointed as the new MLA for North Antrim, and we look forward to working with him over the coming weeks and months ahead.”

Mr Burrows’ background and priorities in his new role are expected to be outlined in the coming days as he formally takes up his position at Stormont.

His appointment ensures continued representation for North Antrim constituents at the Assembly and is seen as a signal of the party’s commitment to stability and renewal.

What Happens Next?

The formal co-option process will allow Mr Burrows to take up his Assembly seat without a by-election, in line with procedures for mid-term MLA replacements.

Further details on Mr Burrows’ policy focus and constituency plans are expected soon.
