After 47 years reporting on local life and championing sporting achievement, veteran Ballymena journalist Shaun O’Neill has been honoured at a civic reception marking his retirement from the Ballymena Guardian.

The occasion also marks the end of a remarkable family connection with the newspaper. For the first time in the Guardian’s history, an O’Neill will no longer be contributing to its pages.

Shaun was welcomed to The Braid in Ballymena by the Mayor of Mid and East Antrim, Alderman Thomas Gordon, alongside family, friends and former colleagues, in recognition of his contribution to local journalism and charitable causes.

A family legacy in local journalism

Shaun began his career at the Ballymena Guardian under the newspaper’s founding editor, his uncle Maurice O’Neill.

Over almost five decades, he rose through the ranks to become Deputy Editor and Sports Editor, establishing a long association with the newspaper and the sporting life of the wider Ballymena community.

His retirement brings to a close a family involvement stretching back to the Guardian’s beginnings, marking a significant moment in the history of one of the town’s longstanding local newspapers.

Championing grassroots sport and local talent

A central part of Shaun’s contribution has been his commitment to local sport, giving recognition to athletes, clubs, coaches and volunteers whose achievements might otherwise have received little public attention.

Through his work as Sports Editor, he helped bring grassroots sporting stories to a wider readership, documenting the efforts and successes of people involved in sport across the community.

Speaking at the civic reception, Mayor Alderman Thomas Gordon paid tribute to that contribution.

“I am very pleased that we have been able to gather to recognise and celebrate the remarkable career and contribution to this Borough of Shaun O’Neill,” the Mayor said.

“Through his passion for sport, Shaun has raised the profiles of many of our young athletes, sports clubs, coaches and volunteers who may have otherwise gone unnoticed by the wider public.”

Recognition for charitable support

Beyond his newspaper career, Shaun has also been recognised for his support of local charitable causes, including the Northern Ireland Hospice and Children’s Hospice.

The Mayor acknowledged that commitment as part of the civic tribute, recognising a contribution to community life extending beyond journalism.

“He has also been a keen supporter of local charities, such as the Northern Ireland Hospice and Children’s Hospice.

“I thank him for his years of dedicated service and wish him a long and happy retirement.”

For generations of Ballymena Guardian readers, Shaun’s work has helped record the sporting achievements and everyday stories of the local community. His retirement closes a 47-year career while bringing an end to an O’Neill family connection that has been part of the newspaper since its foundation.
