More than 55,000 electricity customers across Northern Ireland are set to see their bills rise from April after two suppliers confirmed significant tariff increases.
Click Energy will increase its electricity tariff by 9.5%, while Share Energy customers will face a much larger rise of 26.4%, with both changes coming into effect on 1 April 2026.
The increases mean a typical Click Energy household could pay around £108 more per year, while a typical Share Energy customer could see annual costs rise by around £213.
Thousands of households affected
The Consumer Council said the changes will impact around 33,000 Click Energy consumers and approximately 22,500 Share Energy customers.
Raymond Gormley, Head of Energy at the Consumer Council, described the increases as unwelcome for households already dealing with rising living costs.
He said:
“This is very unwelcome news for around 33,000 Click Energy consumers and around 22,500 Share Energy consumers. This increase has been driven by the continued volatility in wholesale energy costs, caused by geopolitics in the Middle East.”
Advice for consumers worried about bills
The Consumer Council is encouraging households struggling with electricity costs to seek help early and review how they pay for their energy.
Mr Gormley said:
“If anyone is struggling to pay their electricity bills or top-up their prepayment meter, please get in touch with your supplier for help and advice. We would encourage consumers to think about the way they pay for their energy and see if they can reduce their energy costs.”
He added that some payment methods can be significantly more expensive.
“Being on a standard tariff and paying on receipt of a bill is the most expensive way to pay for your electricity. Switching payment option, changing billing method, or even switching supplier may save you money.”
