Television presenter and scientist Professor Brian Cox is expected to present a ‘science summer school’ in Ballymena next autumn.
The event for 400 schoolchildren is to be rescheduled following cancellation in June due to the Covid pandemic.
The initiative is aimed at generating interest in STEM subjects – science, technology, engineering and mathematics – and will be funded by Mid and East Antrim Borough Council at a cost of £20,000.
The council’s Borough Growth Committee was told at a meeting earlier this week that Professor Cox has confirmed his commitment to attend. He is expected to deliver a keynote address and there will be lectures and workshops.
Physicist Brian Cox, who is the presenter of BBC’s ‘Adventures in Space and Times’, is widely credited with increasing interest in the science subject among young people.
UCAS has reported a 52 per cent increase in applications to university physics courses since 2008.
His BBC Two ‘Wonders Of’ series is reportedly one of the channel’s most popular shows.
In the 80s and early 90s, Brian was a keyboard player with the bands D:Ream and Dare.
