A community beach clean at Ballygally brought local people together on Monday evening to help care for one of Mid and East Antrim’s most popular coastal beauty spots.

The clean-up event, which took place on Monday 29 June, saw volunteers join forces with the Mid and East Antrim Borough Council Outdoors team to collect litter from the shoreline and surrounding beach areas.

With coastal locations often experiencing increased littering during the summer months, the event aimed to help protect the local environment while encouraging responsible use of shared outdoor spaces.

People of different ages took part in the clean-up, collecting rubbish and sorting materials for recycling where possible while enjoying time outdoors on Ballygally beach.

Unexpected items among the litter collected

Volunteers uncovered a wide variety of discarded items during the clean-up effort.

Among the rubbish removed from the beach were disposable barbecues left behind by visitors, along with more unusual finds including a car mud flap.

The range of items collected highlights the challenges faced in keeping coastal areas clean, particularly during the busy summer season when visitor numbers increase.

Mid and East Antrim Borough Council thanked everyone who took part in the beach clean and helped make a positive difference to the local coastline.

The council also encouraged residents and visitors to dispose of litter responsibly and help keep shared outdoor spaces clean and welcoming for everyone.

Community-led initiatives such as the Ballygally beach clean continue to play an important role in protecting local environments and ensuring future visitors can enjoy the area’s natural beauty.
