Ulster Unionist Party MLA Colin Crawford has announced his resignation from the Northern Ireland Assembly, confirming he will step down with immediate effect following a period of deep personal reflection.

In a statement released on Friday evening, Mr Crawford, who has represented North Antrim at Stormont, described the decision as “difficult” but ultimately the right one for both himself and his family.

“After much soul-searching, I have decided the time has come for me to step away from politics. This has been a difficult decision, but I know in my heart it is the right one for myself and my family,” he said.

Mr Crawford first entered public life as a councillor in Ballymena before being elected to the Assembly to represent the people of North Antrim. His departure marks the end of a political career grounded in community service and marked by his commitment to constituency work.

“It has been the honour of my lifetime to serve the people of Ballymena as a Councillor and North Antrim as their MLA,” he stated. “While I may not have always succeeded, I have always strived to represent and work on behalf of those who have sought my help.”

Expressing gratitude to his staff, local party members and constituents, Mr Crawford said their support had meant a great deal throughout his time in office.

“To my incredible staff, North Antrim Association, and the many constituents who placed their faith in me – thank you. To those who have reached out with kindness in recent weeks – your messages have touched me more than you know.”

The Ulster Unionist Party has not yet confirmed who will replace Mr Crawford in the Assembly. His departure comes at a time of continued political flux in Northern Ireland, and his absence will leave a notable gap within the party’s ranks in the region.

Concluding his statement, Mr Crawford offered a heartfelt farewell to those he served:

“For now I simply want to say from the bottom of my heart – thank you for the trust you placed in me. It was a privilege I never took for granted.”
