The abandoned cat found in a pet carrier cable-tied to the gates of Mid-Antrim Animal Sanctuary
A cat was discovered secured inside a carrier and cable-tied to the gates of Mid-Antrim Animal Sanctuary on Wednesday evening (25 February), prompting a renewed appeal from the charity about the risks of abandoning animals.
The cat is now safe and receiving veterinary care, the sanctuary confirmed. However, the animal was not microchipped, making it impossible to trace an owner.
While staff expressed relief that the cat had at least been left somewhere it could be found, they made clear that abandoning an animal — even at a rescue facility — is not the correct or safe way to surrender a pet.

In a statement, the sanctuary said:
“This evening (Wednesday 25 February) a cat was found secured in a carrier at our gates. The cat is now safe and receiving veterinary care.
“Unfortunately, the cat is not microchipped.
“While we are relieved the cat was brought somewhere safe, abandoning an animal, even at a rescue is not the correct way to surrender. It was not without risk to the cat.”
The incident highlights the mounting pressure faced by animal rescues across the region. Mid-Antrim Animal Sanctuary confirmed it receives a high volume of surrender requests every month, but capacity constraints mean it cannot take in every animal presented to it.
“Our space and resources are limited and we must prioritise cases based on welfare need and capacity,” the statement continued.

The charity is urging anyone struggling with their cat to make direct contact rather than resorting to abandonment.
“If you are struggling with your cat, please contact us directly. We may not always have immediate availability, but we will always try to offer guidance and support in a safe and appropriate way.”
Staff also thanked those who acted quickly to protect the animal.
“Thank you to the passing staff member and volunteer who stepped in and ensured the cat was safe.”
The case serves as a stark reminder of both the pressures facing pet owners and the limited resources available to local rescues. Sanctuary representatives are encouraging responsible ownership, including microchipping, and early communication where support is needed.
Mid-Antrim Animal Sanctuary is based at Greystone Road, Antrim. You can find out more about the charity’s ongoing work at www.midantrim.org and on the organisation’s social media pages.
