Ballymena marked its 400th anniversary on Saturday with a major day of celebration that transformed the town centre into a vibrant showcase of community pride, entertainment and local history.

Families, community groups, performers and visitors gathered across Ballymena on 23 May for a packed programme of events marking four centuries since the town’s historic charter was granted in 1626.

The milestone celebrations drew large crowds throughout the day, with the colourful Celebration Parade becoming one of the standout moments as it made its way through the town centre to cheers from spectators lining the streets.

Residents of all ages turned out for the occasion, many dressed for both the wet weather and the significance of the anniversary, as Ballymena celebrated a landmark moment in its history.

Beyond the parade, People’s Park became a focal point for the festivities with live entertainment, performances, music, artists and family attractions creating a festival atmosphere across the afternoon.

The celebrations brought together schools, sports clubs, musicians, community organisations and local businesses in what became one of the town’s largest civic events in recent years.

Children and families packed the park while performers and entertainers helped create a lively atmosphere filled with music, laughter and celebration.

For many attending, the anniversary was not only a celebration of Ballymena’s past, but also a reflection of the strong community spirit that continues to shape the town today.

Mayor of Mid and East Antrim, Councillor Jackson Minford, said the anniversary recognised the generations of people who helped build Ballymena over four centuries.

He said:

“Together we are celebrating 400 years of Ballymena. The town we call home has been shaped by four centuries of resilience, innovation, and community spirit.

“This anniversary is not just a marker of time - it is a tribute to the generations of people whose hard work, generosity, and civic pride have shaped Ballymena into the place we know and love. Let’s look forward to the chapters still to be written.”

The anniversary celebrations also highlighted Ballymena’s long-standing role as one of Northern Ireland’s key commercial and social centres, with the event attracting people from across Mid and East Antrim and beyond.

Four centuries of Ballymena history

Ballymena’s modern history dates back to 1626 when King Charles I granted a charter allowing the town to hold markets, helping establish Ballymena as a growing centre of trade and industry in County Antrim.

Over the centuries, the town expanded through agriculture, linen manufacturing, commerce and engineering, later becoming one of Northern Ireland’s best-known market towns.

Ballymena has also produced internationally recognised figures from business, politics, sport and entertainment, while maintaining a strong identity rooted in local community life.

The 400th anniversary celebrations offered residents an opportunity not only to reflect on that history, but also to celebrate the town’s resilience through periods of economic change, conflict and regeneration.

The scale of Saturday’s turnout underlined the strong sense of identity and civic pride that continues to exist across Ballymena, with thousands choosing to take part in a celebration centred on the town’s people, history and future.
