Ballymena man sentenced in domestic violence case for “brutal and sustained attack”

Scales of justice

Today, Thursday 14th December, a 25 year old man from the Ballymena area was sentenced to five years and eight months at Antrim Crown Court for five charges including wounding with intent to commit grievous bodily harm, possession of an offensive weapon with intent to commit an indictable offence, criminal damage and breach of a restraining order.

Kevin Nellis will serve two years and 10 months in prison and two years and 10 months on licence. He will also be subjected to a restraining order for 10 years with regards to the victim.

Detective Chief Inspector Steph Finlay said:

“This was a brutal and sustained attack which resulted in serious long-term injuries, threats and was a deeply traumatic experience for the victim to go through.

“Domestic abuse has absolutely no place in our society, it is never acceptable.

“We would encourage anyone who is experiencing any form of domestic abuse, or concerned about someone who is, to speak out to stop it. Report to Police by calling 101, or in an emergency call 999. If you're calling 999 for help, but too afraid to speak, dial 55 on your mobile phone when calling in an emergency and the operator will know that you need to be put through to police.

“A 24-hour Domestic and Sexual Abuse Helpline is also available to anyone who has concerns about domestic or sexual abuse, now or in the past. The number to call is 0808 802 1414.”

The Domestic Violence and Abuse Disclosure Scheme also provides a right to ask about someone’s history of abuse. If you have concerns about your partner, ex, or a friend’s partner, you can make a confidential application to Police at your local station, via telephone or online.
