‘As a community, we are heartbroken’: Tributes paid to Belfast man after Braniel bonfire tragedy

A community in East Belfast has been left heartbroken following the death of Warren “AKA” Lyttle after a tragic accident at the Braniel bonfire on Friday night. July 11.
Friends and community organisations have paid tribute to Warren, describing him as a familiar face who was known and loved by many.
Following discussions with his family, Saturday night’s bonfire will proceed at their request, with a minute’s silence to be held in Warren’s memory before it is lit.
‘A tragic loss’
In a joint statement, Braniel Bonfire Committee, Braniel Loyal Flute Band and Braniel Community Group said:
“It is with great sadness that we have learned of the passing of our friend, Warren ‘AKA’ Lyttle, following last night’s tragic accident at the Braniel Bonfire.
“Our thoughts, prayers and deepest sympathies are with Warren’s family, friends and everyone who knew and loved him at this incredibly difficult time.
“As a community, we are heartbroken by this tragic loss and ask that everyone keeps his loved ones in their prayers in the days and weeks ahead.”
The groups said Warren’s family had expressed their wish for the bonfire to go ahead as planned.
“Following discussions with Warren’s family, they have expressed their wish for the bonfire to proceed as planned,” the statement continued.
“After careful consideration, we have decided to honour their request.”
Minute’s silence before bonfire is lit
The bonfire will be lit at 9pm on Saturday, July 11.
Those attending are being asked to observe a minute’s silence in Warren’s memory before the lighting and to leave the area quietly afterwards.
The joint statement added:
“We respectfully ask everyone attending to join us in observing a minute’s silence in Warren’s memory before the bonfire is lit.
“We also ask that, once the bonfire has been lit, everyone pays their respects by dispersing quietly and respectfully afterwards.
“We would ask all those attending to show dignity, compassion and respect for Warren’s family and friends throughout the evening.”
The groups concluded:
“May Warren rest in peace, and may his family find strength and comfort in the love and support of those around them.”
‘A familiar face who will be sadly missed’
Dundela Social Club also paid tribute to Warren, who was affectionately known as “AKA”.
In a statement, the club said:
“The staff, committee and everyone at Dundela Social Club would like to extend our sincere condolences to the family and friends of Warren Lyttle (AKA), on his passing.
“AKA was a familiar face around the club and will be sadly missed by many.
“Our thoughts and prayers are with all who knew and loved him at this difficult time.
“Rest in peace, AKA.”
Saturday evening’s gathering will now become an opportunity for those who knew Warren to stand together in silence, remember his life and show their support for his grieving family and friends.
