Northern Ireland’s leading cancer charity, Action Cancer, has unveiled an exciting new fundraising initiative: the Marbella Walking Festival, set to take place from 1st to 6th October 2025.

This unique event invites participants to explore the breathtaking landscapes of Marbella, Spain, while raising vital funds to support the charity’s life-saving cancer prevention, detection, and support services.

The festival offers walkers the chance to traverse Marbella’s stunning coastal paths, scenic countryside trails, and picturesque mountain routes, with options to cover 10km, 20km, or 30km per day.

Beyond the opportunity to soak in the sun-soaked beauty of the Costa del Sol, participants will be contributing to Action Cancer’s mission to support over 20,000 people across Northern Ireland annually through essential services.

Among those stepping up for the challenge are Maria (25) and Madeleine (22), daughters of local breast cancer ambassador Judith Boyle.

Judith, a 54-year-old yoga enthusiast from Northern Ireland, was diagnosed with breast cancer in April 2024 after a routine screening at Downe Hospital. Throughout her treatment, she benefited from Action Cancer’s therapeutic services, which played a pivotal role in her recovery.

“We’re so grateful for the support I received from Action Cancer,” Judith said.

“From the one-to-one yoga therapy sessions with Geraldine that helped me reconnect with my practice, to the acupuncture treatments with Mary that eased lingering side effects, every moment of care made a difference. The Marbella Walking Festival gives my daughters a chance to say thank you and to help ensure that more people like me can access the same life-changing support services.”

Judith’s daughters are among the many participants who will walk to honour loved ones and support Action Cancer’s vital work.

The charity provides services such as breast screening for women aged 40-49 and over 70 (outside the NHS screening age range), skin cancer detection for those aged 18 and above, and therapeutic support including counselling, acupuncture, and scar therapy for anyone affected by a cancer diagnosis.

Kelsey O’Donnell, Treks & Activities Executive at Action Cancer, expressed her enthusiasm for the event:

“We’re absolutely thrilled to launch this exciting new walking challenge in the stunning surroundings of Marbella. It’s a fantastic opportunity for participants to explore beautiful landscapes, build lasting friendships with fellow adventurers, and stay active — all while making a real difference for local people affected by cancer.”

She added, “Everyone who signs up will receive dedicated one-to-one support, a personalised fundraising plan, and branded resources to help them reach their goals. Whether you’re an experienced walker, want to honour a loved one, or are simply looking for a meaningful challenge, we would love to hear from you.”

The Marbella Walking Festival is open to all, with a registration fee of £100 and a minimum sponsorship commitment of £1,600.

This fundraising target covers return flights, transfers, four-star accommodation at the Sol Marbella Estepona · Atalaya Park, half-board meals (breakfast and evening meal), and a festival pass. Participants can choose their daily walking distance — 10km, 20km, or 30km — tailoring the challenge to their fitness level and goals.

The funds raised will directly support Action Cancer’s critical services, which make a tangible difference in communities across Northern Ireland. From early detection programmes to therapeutic support, the charity’s work ensures that thousands of individuals receive the care and resources they need to navigate a cancer diagnosis.

A Journey with Purpose

The Marbella Walking Festival is more than a physical challenge; it’s an opportunity to connect with others, honour those affected by cancer, and contribute to a cause that transforms lives.

For Judith Boyle and her family, the event is a way to give back to a charity that provided hope and healing during a challenging time.

For those inspired to take part, Action Cancer is ready to support every step of the journey. To register or learn more, contact Kelsey O’Donnell at kodonnell@actioncancer.org or call 028 9080 3352.
