Glarryford Young Farmers’ Club has paid tribute to one of its most devoted members, Ernest (Ernie) O’Hara, as the club came together to celebrate his 90th birthday and honour more than seven decades of unbroken service.
The milestone celebration was held on Wednesday 29 November 2025, bringing together past and present office bearers to recognise a man whose commitment has helped shape the club for generations.
A member of Glarryford YFC since 1951 and a committee member since 1954, Ernie O’Hara has given a lifetime of dedication to the organisation. He played a key role in the purchase of the premises that the club now proudly calls home in Glarryford, helping to secure a lasting base for future generations of young farmers.

To many within the local community, however, Ernie is best known as the man behind the lens. For decades, he has faithfully photographed and filmed club events, large and small, creating an invaluable visual record of rural life, friendships and achievements.
The club said it is truly indebted to Ernie for preserving its history so beautifully, describing the extensive collection he has built as a treasured archive that continues to connect members past and present.
Celebrating his 90 years was described as a privilege, with Glarryford YFC expressing deep gratitude for all he has given to the club and wider community over a remarkable lifetime of service.
Thanks were also extended to committee members who helped organise the evening, with particular recognition given to Janette, Mervyn and Wallace for their dedication in ensuring the event’s success.

Local caterers Delightful Bites were thanked for their food and excellent service, while David A Scott Photography captured the celebrations on the night.
Ernie’s contribution to community life has previously been recognised at national level. In 2018, he was awarded a British Empire Medal (BEM) in honour of his service.
The celebrations continued into December with a charitable focus. On Wednesday 10 December, Glarryford YFC welcomed Paul McCusker from Ballymoney, representing Marie Curie, for the presentation of a cheque totalling £1,700.

The fundraising was organised by Ernie O’Hara himself to mark his 90th birthday, with generous donations from past and current members of the club. The funds will support Marie Curie’s work providing care for people with terminal illness and support for their families.
The club expressed sincere thanks to everyone who contributed, noting that the charity holds a special place in the hearts of many within the community.
The twin celebrations – of a milestone birthday and a significant charitable donation – served as a fitting tribute to a man whose life has been defined by service, generosity and a deep commitment to Glarryford YFC.
