NI Water is pleased to announce that a major £1.8m investment was recently completed to upgrade Ballyvoy Wastewater Treatment Works (WwTW) in the county Antrim village.
The investment involved the design, construction, testing and commissioning of an upgraded plant within the boundaries of the existing Ballyvoy WwTW site.
The upgraded wastewater treatment works will improve wastewater services for customers in the area and enhance river water quality in this scenic village on the doorstep of the Glens of Antrim. The upgrade will help NI Water meet EU water quality and Northern Ireland Environment Agencystandards, and will accommodate current and future population growth in the area.
John Griffin, Senior Project Manager with NI Water said: “NI Water is delighted to announce the recent completion of this wastewater scheme.
“Our services have never been more essential to the health and wellbeing of the public than now, and this scheme will benefit customers in the village of Ballyvoy.
“NI Water and our project team would like to thank local residents, businesses and commuters for their patience and cooperation throughout this essential scheme.Hopefully the local community will see the benefits for many years to come, as the scheme will improve wastewater services in the area and lead to environmental improvements including improved water quality in the River Carey.”
Infrastructure Minister Nichola Mallon added:
“I am pleased to see this £1.8 million investment completed at BallyvoyWastewater Treatment which will deliver an upgraded treatment works for people living and working in the area.
“Continued investment in the water and wastewater services throughout Northern Ireland is essential to improving this critical infrastructure which has become even more vital in the past year in protecting public health.
“These important works will improve the environment and the lives of citizens in the area as well as supporting economic growth.”
The contractor for this major investment was Dunmurry-based Farrans Construction working in partnership with TES and Belfast-based RPS.
John Murphy, Contracts Manager with Farrans Construction added:
“Farrans TES are very pleased to be involved in this project from the early planning stages to final completion. The project was delivered ahead of time and on budget, this was mainly down to the great collaboration between ourselves, our client NI Water and their representatives RPS, local supply chain and surrounding landowners. The final impact is enhanced water quality which will benefit all in the local community.”
The investment at Ballyvoy is an excellent example of what can be done when the necessary funding is in place.
NI Water’s goal is to ensure we have a modern, efficient service today and in the future. While chronic underfunding of NI Water is an urgent issue, we are working hard at a local level to find solutions to enable Councils and developers to progress their vision and facilitate future economic development.
The message is clear, NI Water is ready to provide engineering solutions to short-term constraints where possible, however we must face the inescapable reality that the full funding identified by the Utility Regulator in its Draft Determination (PC21 business plan) is required to fulfil the vision of economic expansion for our towns and cities.
This is not a ‘wish list’ or a ‘nice to have’; this is the plan that will help us ensure NI Water can deliver in a strong, modern regional economy.
