Council exploring possible new location for Causeway Airshow

An internal working group has been set up within Causeway Coast and Glens Council to develop a new International Causeway Airshow.

The Local Democracy Reporting Service understands the group consists of approximately five councillors and officers.

Last January 2020, councillors voted 24 to 15 in favour of a motion that council ‘would develop a new International Causeway Airshow for 2022 to mark the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee and explore holding the event every two years from 2022′.

It is understood discussions are ongoing to move the location of the show to the A2 Coast Road, between Portrush and Portstewart.

The considered move is due to the aircraft having to form their display further away from the public on the East Strand, Portrush due to Civil Aviation Authority rules.

The new flight plan would allow the aircraft to fly closer to shore, giving spectators an opportunity for a ‘wow’ experience.

The motion which was passed last year suggested that the airshow should be a “key regional event not just for the borough but for Northern Ireland,” and that the council should explore working in partnership with the Ministry of Defence and Tourism NI, among other organisations.

Airwaves Portrush was called off in February 2020 due to having its funding withdrawn as the council tried to slash its £68.7m debt.
