David Ervine (1995)
To mark the 30th anniversary of the Loyalist ceasefire on October 13th, 2024, RTÉ will broadcast a new documentary David Ervine: Lust for Peace this week, which delves into the transformative journey of the late David Ervine, a former UVF bombmaker turned PUP peacemaker.
Airing tonight on RTÉ ONE and RTÉ Player, this documentary charts his life and career and explains his significance to the Northern Ireland peace process.
The original, feature-length documentary was made by an amateur group of David Ervine’s friends from the Ballymac Friendship Centre, and funded by a grant from Communities in Transition, an All-Island organisation which exists to promote mutual understanding and peace between the peoples of this island.
The broadcast by RTÉ will be narrated by Áine Lawlor, with the programme offering personal insights and recollections from a wide range of individuals who knew David Ervine, including his family, former colleagues, political figures, and the relatives of UVF victims.
Contributors include Jeanette Ervine, widow of David Ervine; Bertie Ahern, former Taoiseach; the Rev. Chris Hudson, trade unionist, Christian Minister and peace activist; Billy Hutchinson, former UVF paramilitary, now PUP President; and Moore Sinnerton, biographer of David Ervine.
Watch this Thursday, October 10th at 11.15pm on RTÉ One and RTÉ Player.
